With the X Factor back on our screens and previous contestants riding high in the charts (Olly Murs & Joe McEldery are both currently in the UK top ten), last year’s runners up ‘Belle Amie’ are back with their own brand of ‘girl power’. In Dublin last week to promote the launch of their first ever single, ‘Girls Up’ which is out now, Esther Campbell, Sophia Wardman and Rebecca Creighton share some of their rather quirky style inspiration.

Like our new song, Belle Amie is all about not caring what anyone else thinks and just being yourself, and that’s exactly what we do”, says Sophia Wardman, one of the three original members of the group. “Our new single is an introduction to us as a group and we’ve completely put our personalities into the video. We love bright clothes and we’re a little bit wild – we don’t take ourselves too seriously!

Since coming out of the X Factor last year, the girls been busy honing their talents as a group and moulding Belle Amie into the act they want to be and insist the band has completely changed.

There will be no little dresses or strappy sandals for one. We have a totally different style, we’re all very different and our music is totally different as well. It’s not cheesy, it’s urban pop. We didn’t have a chance to be ourselves, sing our songs or dress like ourselves in the show so it’s nice to get that chance now. Our personalities weren’t showing on the show and we really want people to see us as the individuals that we are.”

Describing themselves as a combination of Gwen Stefani, Rihanna and Pink all in one band, the girls say their spontaneity and mix-matching clothes and personalities might not work in some bands but is definitely the way to go for them.

I love Katy Perry and think her style is amazing”, said Rebecca. “She is fun and wears bright colours and my style is a reflection of that too. I also love Dita Von Tease and I think their style and outfit choices are a great inspiration”.

From underneath her trilby Sophia declared Timmy Mallet and Fearne Cotton as her style icons. “I love old school American 80’s and I really like Fearne Cotton. I think my style is quite like hers and it’s a casual, laid back look.

Meanwhile Esther, the youngest member of the band, takes her style inspiration for the princess of pop Rihanna. “My clothes tend to be really now… As a band, we completely clash and when people think ‘girl band’ they usually think of matching black dresses. That’s completely not us. Because we’re so different personality-wise, it looks right for us to mix-match. Like anyone else, we want to dress how we feel. We’re innocent and we look disgraceful without make-up – we’re just normal girls and we hope people will see that!
