WEDDING DRESS TRENDS FOR 2010

WEDDING GOWN trends

As the big day approaches it can be difficult trying to stay ‘on trend’ and choose a wedding dress that compliments your body shape. Here we share some favourite styles from this season and how to make them work for you.

The catwalks might have moved on to Autumn-Winter trends for 2010 but that’s not much good to you if you’re getting married over the next few months. If you haven’t decided on your wedding dress (or are thinking of chucking the one you impulse bought six months ago and going for a different style!) now is a good time to take a look at current trends and decide how you can add some of your own personality and individuality to your wedding day look. If the big day is fast-looming and you’re still on the hunt for the perfect bridal gown, the good news is that current wedding fashion trends are really diverse. You can have a wedding-gown style based on pretty much any era of fashion and still be extremely fashionable right now. How you wear it will make all the difference.

SLINKY SILHOUETTES BRINGING SEXY BACK
Whether you’ve got a fabulous, slim figure or just some fantastic control underwear, now is the time to rejoice as sexy, figure-hugging wedding dress silhouettes are hot, hot, hot. Sheath gowns and slim column gowns are setting the trend here and the look is set to continue for some time to come. Add to the mix a beautiful backless number with subtle detailing and you have the ingredients for a look that’s elegant and demure with understated sexiness. I think a revealed back is always a good choice for a wedding dress especially considering the view your guests have at the ceremony. Why not give them something to admire? FISHTAIL PUFFBALL
Modern brides who want the best of a full-skirted dress with a sleek look will be after the fishtail style. This is a tight-fitting dress that flares out at the bottom. The fishtail, or mermaid style as it is sometimes referred to, is reminiscent of wedding gowns from the 1950’s and screams Hollywood glamour. Think Audrey Hepburn at the races in My Fair Lady – an extremely tight-fitting fishtail style gown. What’s great about the Fifties influence is it was a period where the hour-glass shape was celebrated in all its glory. A fishtail style wedding dress is perfect for curvy girls with a fuller figure, heavier on top or broad shouldered, as it adds balance to the silhouette and draws the attention of the eye down to the ‘tail’. A softly shaped skirt that skims over the hips will still give you a fabulous shape.

BALLERINA SKIRT
The most traditional style of wedding dress combines a fitted bodice with a full skirt. This style comes in many different variations but my favourite, generally viewed as one of the most romantic shapes, is the ballerina style skirt. Normally made from reams of frothy tulle, this style dress is as voluminous as it gets. Think Carrie in ‘Sex And The City - The Movie’, when she all but gets lost in a fab Vera Wang creation. If you have a slim-hipped figure and a full bust, this shape will balance top and bottom perfectly, giving you that fairytale bride look. A word of warning though if you are not full busted, avoid this style dress as it will make your bust look tinchy. Also if you are petite there’s the possibility you could just disappear into the dress!

INJECT SOME PERSONALITY
Once you’re happy and have signed off on your wedding dress, next it’s time to think about how you can inject some of your own personality into your look. With a bit of imagination this is quite easy to do. Statement accessories and jewellery are all in and readily available on the hightstreet. Team an exquisite gown with statement accessories for a look that’s beautifully demure and elegant. Renowned Irish designer Paul Costelloe added a stunning jewellery range to his portfolio earlier this summer and as a collection combines the perfect mix of traditional with understated elegance ideal for your wedding outfit. The pieces include bracelets, pendants and rings, in sterling silver and encrusted with sparkling crystal stones, with pearls on certain pieces.
