Q. I’ve fancied a guy in my office for a couple of months now. It’s just been announced at work that this year all departments are having one combined Christmas party at the end of November. I’m hoping he’ll be there and I need to find the right dress? Please bear in mind I’m on a tight budget. Sarah-Jane, 25, Kilkenny.

A. Sequins have become a regular feature in many women’s wardrobes throughout the year but it’s hard to beat them for a bit of Christmas sparkle. New Look has once again enlisting the help of Kelly Brook for a new range of party dresses. This capsule collection features a variety of dress styles from low-cut backs, plunging V-necks, thigh-skimming hemlines to full-length maxi dresses that are glamorous, sophisticated and pocket friendly. The emerald green sequined dress with low cut back and full-length sleeves is a stunning party number and is also available in baby pink (€54.99). It’s amply embellished so accessories should be kept to a minimum; a party clutch, some heels and a statement ring perhaps. The collection also includes the demure black pleated maxi dress with cinched waist (€59.99). This is an altogether more luxe look but equally as glam. For full on Christmas swagger, the red paillette (oversized sequins) dress at M&S is an unadulterated attention-grabber.

Q. Hi, I’m throwing a party for my son’s first birthday and have family traveling up from the country to attend. I haven’t seen many of them since he was born I want to make a bit of effort for the occasion. Naturally there’s going to be a lot of young kids so I need something that’s practical. I was thinking a nice shirt style dress. What do you think and have you spotted anything? Rebecca, Wicklow.

A. I for one am a big fan of the shirtdress. Not too formal, not overly feminine, practical and a high style quotient. What’s not to love! Given the occasion it sounds like a good choice. However you need to choose carefully. A shirtdress may look amazing on a mannequin but their inherent lack of tailoring and structure often means they are less flattering on anything bigger than a size 8. With that in mind, Penney’s currently have some simple shirtdresses in store from €15. At Arnotts Trina Turk brings bright splashes of colour with a mosaic print in silk (€320). Both of these will work well with a pair flats for the kid’s party and some heels later on when the adult fun begins. SimpleBe have a sweet tailored shirt dress for £40. Feel free to change the belt to break up the look and introduce texture.

Hi I’m Alison Canavan and I’m so excited to be sharing my parenting tips with you right here on HelpMyStyle.ie. My son James recently turned one and it’s been a rollercoaster year of tears and laughter. I love being a Mum and James truly is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. But as a parent we face many challenges and sometimes knowing what to do doesn’t come naturally. I’ve spent the last year researching different aspects of pregnancy and parenting. I write a column for VIP Magazine and I also contribute to the Mail on Sunday Supermum supplement.

I’ll be covering all topics ranging from Dental care in babies, Post Natal Depression, Breastfeeding and much more. I’ll also be giving some fitness and nutrition tips to new Mums. Shifting that baby weight can be really hard but just remember it took nine months to make your little angel so it will take at least that to get back in shape. As women we put way too much pressure on ourselves. My advice is eat healthy, get some exercise but above all be happy.

I’ll be sharing fun and easy recipes for the whole family so no more cooking different meals for everyone! When you’re weaning your baby blending and freezing for a week is great but if you’re like me and you’re a working mum sometimes store-bought is the only way. I’ll be telling you how to make healthy choices in the supermarket.

First aid for babies is a must. Babies put everything in their mouths so choking is a hazard. It only takes a second for a baby to slip in the bath. Knowing baby CPR and first aid should be top of your list during pregnancy. James stopped breathing a couple of times and I had no idea what to do. As they say in the girl guides…Be Prepared. I’ll also be discussing child development, safety in the home, bringing you great new products, fashion for kids and much more. Of course if there’s anything else you’d like me to discuss please leave a comment below.

I hope you’re as excited as I am!!

Q. My boyfriend of seven weeks just asked me to accompany him to his friend’s wedding. It’s next week! I’ve not met many of his friends yet and he is best man so I’m going to be sitting with a group of people I don’t know. I’m quite nervous and I’ve no idea what I’m going to wear. The most important thing is something that gives good shape and looks chic. Please help! Melissa, 35, Roscommon.

A. First impressions are so important and understandably you feel the pressure is on. Carraig Donn boutiques currently have a selection of dresses from the label La Rochelle. Many of the styles have taken inspiration from Kate Middleton so they are very ladylike and ideal for a wedding or indeed a day at the races. The beauty of these faux wrap style dresses is the cut. Fitted at the waist with delicate ruching, this style provides great shape and structure. The cap sleeve is demure and provides arm coverage. It comes in a statement red or a more daring black, white and pewter leopard print (both €99). If you are in the market for something more high-end then this elegant pink and red print gathered hip dress by designer Thakoon (€595, Costume) is definitely worth checking out. Simply add a pair of nude peep toe heels, a clutch and some bling for an eye-catching ensemble. While at the opposite end of the price spectrum, Heatons have turned out some beautiful Missoni-inspired prints for autumn including this red and blue pattern dress. Tick another trend box by teaming with a touch of snakeskin such as these platform courts from Penneys (€15).

Q. I’m not 100% sure if a cape is for me (or if I can pull one off) but I’d like to give one a go anyway. I’m willing to spend up to €50 but no more. Have you spotted anything decent? Laura, 36, Dublin.

A. Capes had a strong presence on the catwalks for AW11 featuring prominently in the collections of Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and BCBG Max Azria to name but a few. Victoria Beckham’s latest collection even features a stunning cape style dress (available in Brown Thomas). Both practical and elegant, a cape is a welcome addition to any tran-seasonal wardrobe. There’s a plethora of different styles to choose from to suit your personal taste, everything from tailored, minimalist to full on fur. The Linea range at House of Fraser has a light camel ribbed cape (Pictured above left, €36) that is easy to wear and would be a good option for easing you into the trend. At Next they favoured checks and fringing with prices from €38. Penney’s contrasting camel cape with black trim (pictured above right, €20) lands in stores this month. Or if you fancy going all little red riding hood, check out this red one from New Look (€44.99).

By Nutritionist Andrea Murray

Schools are back this week and for those of us returning from wonderful holiday escapes with a few extra kilos around the hips, help is at hand. We all make such an effort prior to going away to ensure our bodies are bikini perfect however once we get back we need to make sure that they are jean ready too. Here are my top tips for supporting and managing weight:

Wine and beer:
Most people enjoy a tipple when on holidays and it’s a great way of getting into the swing of things. Once back though, coming off the wine and beer will really help with weight loss – if you consider a glass of wine or beer is equivalent to a small bar of chocolate you can understand why. Not only will reducing alcohol intake support weight loss but it will also support the liver to work more efficiently in dealing with the toxins generated by a change of diet, excess alcohol and late nights!

Reduce carbohydrates:
By simply reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat at each meal can dramatically have an effect on your waistline. Excess carbs are stored as fat so a reduction will really help. Whilst reducing your carbohydrate intake you should replace with extra chicken, meat, fish or pulses and lots of vegetables – this will ensure you feel full and make sure that late night grazing does not take place. Remember any carbs you do consume should be of the brown variety (brown breads, brown rice and pasta). These are more complex carbs which realise their sugar store gradually hence keeping you fuller for longer.

Water, Water, Everywhere:
If you feel hungry in between meals have a glass of water. Often, especially in the summer months, dehydration can be perceived as hunger. You’ll be surprised at the effect this can have!

Exercise:
It goes without saying that if you increase your activity levels alongside with these dietary changes, it will really help shifting those extra kilos; I am loving bootcamp especially in the bright evenings and would encourage you all to try. They are fun, friendly, great value and an excellent workout – no need to be shy either as every level of fitness, age, shape and size attends – find a local class near you!

Best of luck, a little effort will really pay off and you’ll be in shape to indulge in all the fabulous autumn fashion.

Q. I wonder if you might be able to tell me where I’ll find a nice slouchy, oversized cardigan, preferably in a neutral colour, in Dublin? Susan.

A. Danish label Gestuz has a few pieces that are the epitome of the slouchy cardigan. I particularly like the chunky cream one (€139.95) at Seagreen, Monkstown – this is crafted oversized knitwear at it’s finest – it’s comfortable, cosy and will inject just the right amount of edge to the most feminine of looks. Ideal for this time of year and tricky trans-seasonal dressing. For a bit of a twist and nod to the current trend for tassels, Awear’s camel coloured oversized cardigan comes with a tasseled edge (€45).

Having seen Nicole first thing in the morning without a shred of product on her skin, I can tell you first hand, she is genuinely outstandingly beautiful – she won the genetic lotto! She tends to favour a natural style of make up. In Monaco recently she was rocking her natural style and look simply gorgeous! Here’s how you can channel a lil’ Nicole in to your life.

Start by spritzing Caudalie Beauty Water on to clean skin, make sure to cover all the face but careful not to drown it. It will wake the skin up and give it a fresh plump finish. Follow with Dr Hauschka Moisturizing Day Lotion, the texture is super milky but gets down deep to nourish and replenish.

This make up is not about coverage. Use a tinted moisturizer to even out the skin tone. If you have dry skin stick with Dr Hauschka and use their “Toned Day Cream”. It has just the right amount of coverage and gives the skin a beautiful expensive finish. If you are oily try using an oil free version like Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer. It’s packed with vitamins and anti-ageing peptides. Yes please.

Add a pinky peachy tone high on the cheekbone to mimic the skins own sun flush (not the usual beetroot we would actually go!) – Bobbi Browns “Nectar” Blush nails it. Just a light swoop over the cheekbone should do the trick. Use a very soft brush for the best result. I like Smash boxes blush brush.

Folly Lipgloss by Chantecaille is perfect for the lip. My love affair with this gloss continues because, firstly, it looks divine, effortless in fact and secondly, the texture is neither gloopy nor synthetic, its just the right type of silky. This colour is sheer enough to brave without being totally wimpy.

Line the eyes with brown kohl pencil, Estee Lauders “Artists Pencils” could not be more user friendly and come with a blender on the other end to help you erase any mistakes. I like to rub the pencil in to the back of my hand, then on to the pad of my fingers and blend on to the eyelid. It will look like a sheer matte brown shadow without you having to go to the trouble of conventional application.

Curl the lashes. Don’t buy a super cheap curler, it wont work and is just a waste of money. Try Eyelures heated Battery operated Lash Curlers. Just push the back of the top lash up and hold for a couple of seconds, do this repeatedly, moving along the lash each time until the entire lash is curled to your liking.

Finish with defined, conditioned, natural lashes. “More than Mascara” by Estee Lauder in Rich Brown will do the trick…Done. Easy peasy.

Q1. I want to get a nice pair of comfy boots for the winter that will go with any outfit? Any ideas?
Andrea, 23, North Dublin.

Riding boots are huge again this autumn winter and if you fancy channeling the country heritage trend these are a must. Wrap up for the cold weather in lots of layers and knits in earthy tones and finish off the look with a pair of riding boots complete with buckles and clasps. This knee-high pair, by Bertie on ASOS (€211.76) in charcoal leather with buckle detailing is divine. Perfect for chilling out at weekends or teamed with tights and a floaty dress for the office. These boots are the epitome of comfort and snugness.

If riding boots don’t tickle your fancy, then how about a pair of lace up boots? Tapping into the military trend that we’ve seen over the past couple of seasons lace ups (whether in wedge, flat, ankle or over the knee) are the perfect nod to a utilitarian look. The epitome of comfort and snugness, when worn with a girly dress they will add just the right amount of edge to roughen up an outfit for a sassy look.

Alternatively cavalry style boots such as these brown/camel pair from River Island (€114) have it all going on. The soft suede and leather combo is guaranteed to add instant chic to any outfit this winter. Team with jeans or leggings for daytime or tights and leather shorts for a super stylish look for a night out on the town.

Q. I’m quite short and always looking for ways to appear taller (well as tall as possible really). Any advice or trends I should take note off this season? Roisin, 26 years, Tipperary.

For shorter women it’s really important to be very selective of the styles you buy into. Many of the more floaty styles that we’re seeing a lot of on the highstreet at the moment can completely swamp a smaller frame, in turn making you appear even smaller then you actually are. When it comes to appearing taller, it’s all about structure. High-waisted trousers are great for creating the illusion of longer legs particularly when worn by petite frames. Seventies style flared trousers featured strongly in the collections of Céline and Marc Jacobs. Warehouse and Savida at Dunnes Stores have both really picked up on this trend and are offering good price points (€60 and €40 respectively). A good tip is to get them an inch or two longer than your usual length and wear with super high heels. This will really give the impression of making you appear taller and leaner. What ever you do, avoid cropped trousers that rest on the calf as this only cuts your already small legs in half.

As far as ladies are concerned it is without question acceptable, if not de rigeur, to openly extol the virtues of the high heel. The popularity of TV programmes such as ‘Sex And The City’ has created a generation of out and proud shoe-addicts who are revered by their female peers.

However as far as us men go, footwear is not always held in such high regard. Well I’m going to break the mould and hold my hands up now and openly admit, that yes, I too possess an inner Imelda Marcos. My name is Darren Kennedy and I’m a trainer addict. There I’ve said it. Feels good to have that out in open. Now that you know trainers are my guilty pleasure, I can proceed honestly.

I’m not going to divulge exactly how many pairs I have (as that would require I count them and there’s enough of them to make that a task worth avoiding) but I’ve been known on occasion to buy trainers that are several sizes too small in the hope that I’ll manage to ‘break them in’ and stretch them from a size eight to a size ten. Needless to say for the most part, after a couple of hours of painful ‘breaking in’, they’ve remained practically untouched in the bottom of my wardrobe.

Size-issues aside, trainers for men are the ideal means of making a subtle style statement and a superb way of injecting some colour and personality into an otherwise somber outfit. Men’s fashion in comparison to women’s is much more subtle and unless you’re planning to make a serious splash in the style stakes it can be difficult to differentiate your look. Trainers, once the mainstays of the gym or sports pitch, are now sophisticated accessories that distract the senses with unusual materials, collaborative designs and surprising levels of formality.

Last year, we witnessed trainer mania at a climax. Collaborations were the big thing (Kanye West teamed up with Louis Vuitton and Mark Ronson for Gucci to create limited edition trainers) and so we witnessed the competition for which boldest brand design.

This season’s finest trainers come in many fabrics, textures and designs with a focus on sleekness and simplicity. It’s a celebration of basic solid colours and shapes with soft accents such as these Hi Tops by Gucci, retailing at no less than €450. Completely lace-free, these trainers flaunt rhodium buckles and in typical Gucci-style are very stylish without hollering it from the rooftops.

When it comes to iconic shoe brands such Nike, Adidas and Reebok, it is the symmetry of a clean and simple creation that is a pair of Converse that wins my top spot. With any good pair of cons, they get better as they mature and look great with a pair of jeans, chinos or even a suit.

Sometimes even iconic labels such as these have to shake things up and break the mould somewhat. As a farewell to esteemed Tokyo brand Number (N)ine, Converse recently teamed up with the now defunct label for a final covetable collection. Head designer Takahiro Miyashita tweaked the classic Converse design with some super-shaggy suede deer-skin leather and side-lacing. The uneven texture lends a speckle-paint effect for a modern Boho feel, leaving only the telltale star logo as an identifier. Retailing at over €100 a pop, these babies drop in select stores around the world so you’ll be doing well to get your hands on them.

Q. I recently bought a skirt with black and white horizontal stripes which I loved until my friend said stripes make you look fatter. Is this true?
Michelle, 28 years, Dundalk.

This is a common misconception. In fact contrary to popular belief horizontal stripes can have the opposite effect and create the illusion of taking off pounds. There is a need for caution however. With horizontal stripes I always recommend giving preference to a thin, graduated stripe that draws the eye up or down the body to create a longer, leaner looking silhouette. For instance, you create a flattering optical illusion of whittling down your waist by combining wider stripes on the bottom of the skirt with narrower stripes at the waist. This dress by Fever (€97) is very clever in it’s use of coloured stripes.

Australian Pop Princess Kylie Minogue has, over the years, managed to pull off some of the most daring styles possible (remember the hotpants craze? ). Recently though she’s been showing us how to pull off this season’s cropped trousers look and in the process giving a lesson in how to dress classic and chic.

The key to this look is keeping it tailored, simple and understated. Kylie does this by teaming the trousers with a crisp white shirt, nude accessories with a pair of strappy heels. I love the flash of red nail varnish which gives just a hint of sexiness.

Creating this look from the highstreet couldn’t be more straightforward. Both Zara and Hobbs stock some great cropped pants but I really like these buckle tab chino trousers from Topshop (€51). For classic pieces like a white shirt, Reiss is always a good port of call. The vintage style gold and black clutch from Awear (€25) provides nice contrast and texture while the strappy slingback heels from Asos (£45) are simply gorgeous!

By Andrea Murray

In my previous two articles on skin and hair you will have noted the importance of water within our daily diets.

We are 70% water hence most functions require this cheap and thankfully, in Ireland, easily available substance. One of water’s key roles is the vital cleansing the body of toxins as generated through chemicals in our foods, stress, pollution and normal body functions. Our liver does the job of managing our toxic load with our lymphatic system – a great picture was described to me of the similarities between a dehydrated lymphatic system and a summer stream that is dry, sludgy, muddy and stagnant! If there is not enough water traveling through the body, toxins that need to be removed, stay within us causing further damage.

Headaches which are a common problem for many are primarily caused by dehydration so if you feel a headache coming on reach for a piece of juicy fruit and a large glass of water which should be drunk steadily until hopefully symptoms ease – let this be the first line of defence rather than a pill packet. Coffee which we will discuss further in later articles is also a demon for dehydrating our bodies as it is a diuretic (releases fluid from the body ie need to wee more!). A good tip is to always have a glass of water with your coffee to balance this water loss.

We need to be having 6-8 large glasses or 1.5-2 litres of good quality water a day. Don’t forget our 5-10 portions of fruit and vegetables also provide your body with good levels of water in the form that suits the body. The most effective way of knowing if your body is hydrated is by checking your urine; it should be colourless and odourless at all times, if it is other than that you need to take some water on board, if you check out the web for ‘urine colour charts’ it will give you a better pictorial.
