One of my first experiences of Ladies Day was a couple of years ago when I attended the Sligo races. On the day itself, one of the organisers, a quick-thinking women, spotted some very well turned-out gents and made an executive decision to pick a Best Dressed Man (BDM). As luck would have it, the winner revealed that every stitch he was wearing had been borrowed (with the exception of his underwear of course) and thrown together hastily that morning. The result was fun, effortless and stylish without a bowler hat or jodhpurs in sight.

In fact, many of the country’s biggest race meetings have cottoned on to how stylish men folk are at these events and offer handsome rewards for their effort.

In terms of social occasions, the races veer slightly towards the formal end of the spectrum so denim is out. There’s no better way of making yourself feel out of place than by turning up to a Best Dressed event in your favourite pair of jeans.

With denim firmly out of the equation, this doesn’t mean you should fall back on your suited and booted work attire. A corporate suit at the races is the sartorial equivalent of a ham sandwich – banal – so don’t go there. Certainly a good rule of thumb is to avoid solid black. If you must choose a darker colour, a charcoal grey or French navy won’t look too heavy in daylight.

Lighter, summer colours are a more appropriate choice. Think summer staples such as light grey or sand such as this ensemble by Tommy Hilfiger. These tones look amazing if your skin is sun kissed. Combine one of these light colours with a simple crisp white shirt for a classic look or add a burst of bold, bright colour for a really fresh and vibrant look. Ted Baker stock a large variety of pattern shirts. A tie is not a prerequisite but if you are out to win BDM it will certainly add a dapper touch. Pick up a colour already in your suit or shirt with your tie and don’t be afraid of injecting a little pattern. Again the idea is frivolous fun not office formal. Next have a great selection of brightly coloured ties for €8.

A simple yet bold style statement is to wear a matching monochromatic outfit such as an all white or pastel coloured ensemble. If the weather allows why not even dress up a pair of tailored shorts such as these seersucker ones from M&S, with a detailed shirt, and a sharp blazer. You’ll look hot to trot! If light Mediterranean colours don’t do it for you, a modern approach to country squire with some light weight plaids is sure to turn heads. Paul Costello’s latest collection at Arnotts includes a fantastic three piece suit.

Like with any winning look, the devil is in the detail. Some guys can wear hats but if it doesn’t feel right don’t force it. A flower on your lapel can look super stylish or if you really know your stuff wear a men’s brooch. Not readily available on the highstreet so you might have to raid the family heirlooms!

Luxury London brand L.K.Bennett opened its first clothing and accessories store at Arnotts on Henry Street this week. Situated on the first floor of the store customers will be able to get their hands on the chic & feminine designs reflected in Tim Walker’s eye-catching campaign (pictured) for SS 2010.

Associated with sophisticated, feminine collections with their signature silhouette draping around the waist, the brand is particularly noted for its shoe & bag collections and use of luxury materials such as nappa leather and pony skin.
