Q. I am trying to avoid always defaulting to jeans this winter and have been looking for some alternatives like chino’s, cargo pants or even cords that can be dressed up or go casual. However I am finding it hard to find some that give nice shape, look great and ones that are full length. I am 5ft 8, size 12. Can you suggest any good shops anywhere or online stores? Thanks, Fiona 30 yrs.
A. Trousers are most definitely one of this season’s sartorial must-haves. There’s a plethora of styles available and includes everything from wide leg, cropped, high-waisted, skinny, slouchy and combinations of all the above. Having good height as you do means you’ve got a great starting point and can pull off most trouser styles. The 70’s have given us super-wide trousers with acres of fabric. This red pair by Betty Jackson at Debenhams (€67.50) provides a welcome blast of colour. For leg lengthening team with heels, preferably a block-heel, to avoid tearing the hem with stilettos. Next have a similar pair of wide leg trousers in brown (€73). Balance out the volume by wearing sleek, fitted tops. Fail-safe options include tailored blouses, fitted tees and fine-knit polo necks. Penneys have a colourful selection of polo necks in store from €10. For more casual wear the sand coloured cargo pants at Esprit (€75.95) are a stylish alternative to jeans for everyday wear. For chinos Pepe London have some casual classics like this pair with pleat detailing below the waistband and with tapered leg (€88.75). Finding the right pair can be time-consuming but it is time well spent when you find the right pair. Pictured above Penneys Polo neck €10.
