At first glance on seeing Presidential hopeful Mary Davis’ full-length election poster I initially thought it as an advertisement for the latest weight loss fad. Not exactly the message she wants to convey. Admittedly she looks great but for an election campaign it is fundamentally flawed in my opinion. Quite simply it’s difficult to make out her face. In the case of someone like Mary Davis, one of the less recognisable candidates, this is potentially election suicide. Obviously the message she is trying to convey is one of modernity, strength and striving forward (she’s actually walking in the image). The use of the colour red is also interesting. Apart from being one of this season’s hit colours, red is an emotionally intense colour that is inherently exciting to the human eye and commands attention. It is by no means coincidence that Mary is decked out head to toe in the colour. Psychology tells us that red gives the impression of seriousness, dignity and encourages confidence. Marketeers regularly use red as a call to action. In this case, votes. Ultimately for me, it doesn’t work.
What do you think of her campaign posters? Do they work for you?
