This season fashion is going native and looking straight to Navajo territory for inspiration. Renowned for their weaving talents and in particular their pattern-making skills, Navajo designs tend to feature strong geometric shapes (think horizontal stripes, rectangles and diamonds), in a palette of earthy tones combined with bright flashes of colour such as blues, yellows and greens.
This season embrace the Native American twist on style. On the catwalks, Missoni went ethnic with mixes of yellows, greens, blues, browns and reds, encapsulating the essence of the Navajo weave. Proenza Schouler really knocked it out of the park, with a collection of incredible Navajo prints in an eye-catching combination of texture and colour. Liz Tyler and Sarah Jessica Parker have both been pictured wearing dresses from the collection.
All the while Isabel Marant went for a more subdued take, favouring texture over colour, with standout pieces including fringed black and white knee-high boots to thick fur-lined coats and throws.
The great thing about this trend is you can go two ways with it – opt for either bold statement pieces or go for a more subdued approach depending on your own style. Personally I think one key piece, for instance an over sized Navajo knit cardi will look awesome worn with some off-duty denims or your LBD. Or if you get your hands on a Proenza Schouler number, you’re sorted. In terms of Navajo-style accessories keep a look out for detailing including fringing, feathers and studs to touch on the trend perfectly.
