Former Miss Ireland Sarah Morrissey has gone on to forge a career as one of Ireland’s most successful, not to mention liked, top models. Featuring in all the major fashion shows each season, Sarah is highly respected both on and off the catwalk. With her down-to-earth personality, great work ethic and of course stunning looks, we thought she’s just our type of gal! We caught up with the gorgeous Dubliner to talk all things fashion.

Describe your style in five words?
Comfortable, Boho, Classic, Black, Simple

What’s your beauty essential?
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream

What item could you not live without?
Mac Eyebrow Pencil.. (I’m obsessed with people’s eyebrows)

If your house was on fire and you’d only time to save one thing, what would it be?
Christian Louboutain Shoes and Cream Burberry Mac (I’m Greedy:-)

Most desired fashion item at the moment?
Probably a Victoria Beckham Dress.. I wore her new collection for a show recently and they are pretty amazing and do wonders for the body. But this is a wish:-)

Best style tip?
Less is more

What’s in your handbag right now?
I only have big bags so there’s a lot in it. Wallet, Glasses, Keys, Ipod, Chewing Gum, Perfume, Deodorant, Camera, Makeup, Earrings, Clips and Underwear (in case I have last minute job). I’m forever taking my wallet out and pulling a bra out with it – very embarrassing!

Who is you style-crush?
Diane Kruger, she does elegance like no other. And Vanessa Paradis, I love her.

Worst or best shopping experience?
I don’t really shop that often. If I do, I never, ever try on clothes. That’s the good thing about doing so many shows, I know what suits me and i usually just buy them after the show.

Best high street store or boutique?
A|wear, I think they’re underrated…gorgeous clothes and Irish owned store. Topshop I love. Also Covet and Bow Boutique in Powerscourt for their amazing dresses.

Favourite place to shop?
New York, I love just wandering around all the stores in Soho

What is your travel essential?
Water, water and more water….

Favourites for online fashion?
Ebay. I’ve bought two amazing dresses on it recently. One for a wedding which would have cost me hundreds but I got it for €30. I was so chuffed with myself for the day.

Worst fashion moment?
Oh god, definitely being way too blonde. God I can’t even look at the pictures now!

What era of style would you most like see return to fashion?
I’m obsessed with people like Jacqueline de Ribes . Reading about the amazing balls she attend in Paris and New York with Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Oleg Cassini etc…So it would have to be the 40s/50s.

Finally, what do you want your style to say about you?
Probably that I’m comfortable with who I am. I dress to make me happy.. If people like the way I dress, that’s a bonus, but if they don’t, at least I do:-)

I was just browsing through some images the other day when I came across some fab styles from New Look. With just the right amount of attitude, all these looks are inter-changeable and so perfect for this time of year. Let’s be honest, as much as we’d rather not confront it, we all need to start thinking about transitioning our wardrobes – you can certainly feel a nip in the air and just today I’ve got my first head cold…aaarrgh!

The velvet boots are fab but my favourite is the Limited Edition Faux Fur coat which is simple gorgeous and it’s only €99!

As pictured above: Limited Edition dress €49, Velvet boots €39, Tights €8, Limited Edition dress, €55 Limited Edition ‘George’ satchel €79, Shoes €69, Tights €8.

Festival season would be nothing if it weren’t for some style inspiration from Alexa Chung. At last weekend’s V festival, Chung worked her signature granny chic look. The brilliant thing about Alexa is she always manages to look effortlessly cool. So with Electric Picnic in clear view, why not channel some Chung into your festival style.

Not only does it look fab but it’s also, dare I say, very practical and comfy – the perfect combination for any festival. In an interview with Vogue about dressing for festivals Chung says: “Wrap up warm, take lots of layers, a good scarf, check the weather reports, invest in some wellies…it needs to be comfortable” and here at HelpMyStyle towers we couldn’t agree more!

Less is definitely more with this look. You want to start with some cut-off denims or to change it up try some leather shorts such as these faux leather ones from Penneys (€13). Take a modern graphic tee, like this one from Topshop (€25), and layer up with a chunky knit. I like this one from Asos (£45) for its colour and just the right amount of granny kitsch. To finish the look slip on some cute cropped wellies (I like these Hunter original lace ups €75) and you’re festival fit. Of course don’t forget your sunnies – we live in hope!

Have you seen her? The newest beauty to join Tom Ford’s line up of sensual fragrances. Since receiving this, I have been pulling it out for only the most precious of occasions. Something about it feels so special. I don’t know whether it is the heavy dark brown apothecary style bottle or the casually elegant scent. To me it epitomises the modern fragrance wearer. Informed, involved and down right picky. I am a self-confessed perfume snob. I wont wear anything overly commercial and always pride myself on wearing unusual scents. Therefore I normally have to combine two. However with the launch of Azure Lime this is no longer necessary.

This scent feels special and modern and decadent. Something I feel we don’t see enough of in the perfume department these days. The great thing about it is that it works so well for both sexes because of the balance of the fragrance combinations. It was inspired by the easy style and relaxed glamour of Mustique it opens with the lush aroma of Limes combined with Valencia Orange, Lemon, Bergamot and wilder ingredients such as mint and black basil. It subtly evolves in to jasmine, neroli and violet and slowly dries down to the headier yet sensual notes of musk and patchouli, finishing up with oakwood and sea moss, which add a charming and unexpected twist.

While I am a massive Tom Ford fan….I just want to live in a world created by him, I must say that I would be as impressed by this fragrance had it come from any other producer. This scent is for those that like to subtly take a stand and get noticed. It’s not bold or brash or loud. It’s like a Chanel 2.55 bag, beautiful, elegant, and downright expensive but an investment and something that never fails to get you noticed. Buy it. It will change your life!

A €6.99 wonder-potion from German discounter Aldi has bagged one of Prudence magazine’s coveted Best Buy Beauty awards.

At an event compered by TV3 star Sinead Desmond held at Dublin’s Gibson hotel last Friday, Aldi’s win was one of 16 top budget beauty buys which were honoured at the Prudence Best Buy Beauty Awards.

The supermarket’s Lacura Face Care Double Lift Regeneration Cream won the Day and Night Creams category, beating off competition from established skincare brands like L’Oréal Paris, RoC and Bliss. A peptide, retinol and vitamin E mix convinced judges that this performance skincare product is a great buy for Irish women who are crying out for quality products that don’t break the bank.

Other winners on the night included Irish brand L’Onglex, which cleaned up in the Hands and Nails category for its excellent Acetone-Free Nail Polish Remover, €3.67, and Penneys, which scored two gongs for its SPF30 Sun Lotion, €2.70, and Ta Ta for Now Concealer, €3, which judges said mimicked much more expensive brush concealers.

Independently judged by a panel of industry experts, Prudence’s beauty awards are now in their second year and are dedicated to rewarding great beauty buys that perform for pocket-friendly prices. The awards also feature ‘splurges’ – more expensive treat buys which are worth the cost because of their high performance.

The Prudence Best Buy Beauty Awards will be published in a special handbag-sized booklet along with the September issue, in stores on September 1st.

This September is set to see running enthusiasts across the country get their jog on for a very special cause. The ‘Run To Africa’ 10K event will be taking place on September 12th in St Anne’s Park, Raheny, raising crucial funds for the charity ‘Playing for Life’, which was established by top sports commentator Tracy Piggott in 2005.

A host of Irish celebrities such as author Amanda Brunker, Presenters Mary Kennedy and Darren Kennedy, GAA stars Seán Óg Ó’Hailpín, Bernard Brogan and Ross McConnell, model Nadia Forde, TV star Katherine Lynch and many more are supporting which aims to attract eager participants from all over Ireland.

After a life-changing visit to Africa, Tracy set up ‘Playing for Life’ with a focus on underprivileged African communities. The charity aims to build better lives for young people through educational, sports, medical and construction project. To date, the charity has worked closely with communities in Tanzania, Kenya and Malawi.

Tracy Piggott claims, “Anyone who participates and fundraises through our ‘ Run to Africa’ event will be giving something incredibly valuable, worthwhile and life-changing to people that need it most. I would like to thank in advance everyone who takes part in September. Good luck and more importantly, have fun!”

To register for the run, log onto www.runtoafrica.org and apply for a sponsorship card.

The launch of The Dublin Festival of Fashion last Thursday evening was a stylish affair in the beautiful Atrium Lounge at The Westin Hotel. The evening was hosted by the lovely Karen Koster, who is the face of the Festival and the guest list included the stylish Louis Copeland, Clodagh McKenna and Brendan Courtney. Guests were treated to Ice Tropez, canapes and a delicious chocolate fountain!

The event was created by Dublin City Business Improvement District and the aim is to draw shoppers into the city centre. Karen Koster made the excellent point that shopping centres really can’t compete with the atmosphere of the city.

The event runs from the 1st to the 3rd of October and will include catwalk shows on both Grafton Street and Henry Street, swap shops and classes in knitting and jewellery making, to mention just some of what will be on offer. A special collection of t-shirts called “We Are Tee” designed by Irish illustrators and designers such as Peter O’Brien, Ellis Boyle and Joanne Hynes will be on sale over the course of the weekend in support of Oxfam’s Climate Change.

A couple of weeks back I gave these little gems to a musician friend of mine, a great guy in his early 20′s who’s about to hit the big time and needs to look the part. I told him to try them out and be it love or loathe it, I wanted an honest report back.

This was the message I received about 2 weeks later…”Great stuff. The gel allowed my razor to sail over my skin like a tug boat on the Thames. I can compare the post shave balm to a cigarette after nookie. Perfection. 10/10.” His words not mine! Nice to know you don’t have to pay the earth to get great results.

Soap and Glory is available at Boots stores nationwide.

With each new season, it becomes more and more apparent that the fashion industry is out to test me. It’s almost as if, prior to designing the collections, all the fashion designers get together, in one of their fabulously chic townhouses no doubt, and decide to re-invent some hideous monstrosity from seasons past and spin it into the most desirable item ever created. This season that item is the cape.

Yes, I said cape. The item of clothing that is most associated with the Batman’s and Superman’s of the world – has now become the most desirable item of Autumn/Winter 2010. You may laugh now, but trust me – come October EVERYONE will be wearing a cape and by the time you decide to jump on board…the best may be well gone.

The cape exists within many of the trends for this season, as demonstrated by Alexander Wang and Celine, which means that it will easily fit into whichever trend you decide to embrace this autumn/ winter. Military is back yet again, and military inspired capes are all over the place. Topshop has a simplistic khaki version with buckle at neck online at the moment for £95, but ASOS has the most exquisite with its ‘Hooded Military Cape’ (€93, pictured centre) – with echoes of red riding hood and shoulder epaulettes, this cape will complete any outfit this season.

For a more relaxed take on the cape – look to the ‘Country Heritage’ trend that Ralph Lauren so frequently champions. As per usual, Whistles has fantastic stock – the cotton-gabardine cape is stunning (£195) and will look perfect teamed with black skinnies and platform boots. To get the cape look right this season, make sure its khaki, simple and has buttons – if it’s good enough for style muse Clemence Poesy (pictured left) its good enough for me!

Joanne Hynes graduated in 2001 with an MA in Womenswear from London’s Central Saint Martins College. The Joanne Hynes label was officially launched in 2003 and her work has since been shown at Fashion Weeks in Paris, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo as well as being featured in Vogue, Elle, The Sunday Times Style, Wallpaper and L’Official to name just a few. She’s dressed artists such as PJ Harvey, Sinead O Connor, Daphne Guinness and Elodie Bouchez. She’s developed the “Joanne Hynes for Topshop” range that was sold at the flagship in Oxford Circus and in Topshop Dublin. In 2006, she was awarded “Brown Thomas Irish Designer of the Season” and her collections continue to go from strength to strength. We caught up with this beacon of talent and intriguing designer…

Describe your style in five words?
Excessive. Conflicting. Fragmented. Automatic. Chameleon-like.

What’s your beauty essential?
Right now it is pink hair dye, I go to the hairdressers to have it done they mix it to my color.

What item could you not live without?
My Joanne Hynes work bag. It’s the shape of a plastic poly shopping bag that you get in a regular supermarket. It is like a regular shopping bag but in leather. It is functional luxury.

If your house was on fire and you’d only time to save one thing, what would it be?
My engagement ring. I take it off every night and leave it beside my bedside. Not a good idea. I like the ritual of putting it on every morning. It reminds me of good memories and a time in my life.

Most desired fashion item – what’s top of your wish list at the moment?
Antique jewellery, as always.

Best style tip?
Style is about reading ones aura, almost like seeing their history. The kind of life they have lived will be expressed through their choice of clothes and their face more to the point. This morning in the Méridien in New Delhi, I saw an amazing looking woman, she was 53 years old. She looked like she had lived an interesting life. She was wearing very short khaki shorts and light creased denim shirt. She looked wonderful in the context of all the luxury of the hotel, perfectly in our own presence. Her facial expressions, expressed her life and her work. She spoke to me and it turned out that she is also a designer, based in Spain. We spent a long time talking. She has lived an amazing life and is now starting all over again after taking a few years out to travel and research. She had a strong aura. The best style tip is to live an interesting life, travel and open your mind and this will be expressed in the way you carry yourself and the way you move in public. It’s not something you can fake. Style cannot be bought or made up on nothing. No matter how much clothes one buys or accessories it’s really about your state of mind. You can wear anything -it’s the way you wear it. I recently had my bag lost at the airport so I wore my husband’s shirts for a few days it was fantastic, I belted them with embellished belts and mixed them up with great sandals. I made it work because it made total sense to do so. It worked well because it made sense to me. I designed them for him, they have very tiny collars and are in cotton, it helped that I liked them a lot.

What’s in your handbag right now?
A travel calculator, a large bottle of Evian, three mobile phones for traveling, a wallet with sterling and dollars and euros, my passport, a mobile phone charger, a magazine, Chanel red lipstick called “Enthusiast”, three black felt tip pens (I detest blue pens and ban them from my studio). A small mirror. My green silk neck scarf that I take everywhere with me. A Meridian pencil and a gold leather drawing book for ideas. My camera.

Who is your style-crush?
Marlene Dietrich.

Worst and/or best shopping experience? The best of course is Tokyo, especially the Comme des Garcons and the Prada store and all of the little avant-garde shops. It is truly experiental shopping. In London I love Conduit Street area and Dover Street. The worst shopping experience was last Wednesday in Dubai. I didn’t realize that I was dehydrated. So when I got on to board the plane I had to be taken off in a wheelchair to board the next flight! They looked after me like a princess though. I felt like Princess Haya of Jordan when I boarded the next flight! I forgot to enough drink water.

Best high street store or boutique?
Uniglow, A wear, Reiss.

Favourite place to shop?
I love shopping in Dublin when I am there, because it is so unbelievably easy to get around. Brown Thomas has a fantastic edit and all of the small boutiques around Ireland have some great finds. Dublin also has some great jewellery stores and vintage stores.

Fashion on the web?
I don’t really shop on line so much. When I do shop, which is rare these days, I like the tangibility and the experience of shopping. The rush of walking out with something you love.

What’s been your worst fashion moment?
Putting pink neon belts over neon yellow biker tops when about nine. I then went on to wear very pale white make up for most of my teens when I was in the DIY Goth period. I call it the black period. I still adore black but I love the power of strong colour.

What era of style would you most like see return to fashion?
I would like to have seen craftsmen making Victorian elliptical cage crinoline under skirts and corsets from boning. I cannot see it coming back to fashion but it would be wonderful to have cultural workshops where these crafts and techniques are brought back. I have a fascination with anything that is extremely difficult to make. Pieces that require artisan production and making attract me. Some of my dresses take days to make and this is my true passion.

Finally, what do you want your style to say about you?
I honestly don’t think about my style coming together as a look. I respond by wearing things I like and I put them together according to my lifestyle. Its automatic really and responsive to where I am in the world and what is in my suitcase or perhaps I may have picked up something along the way. I travel a lot so I dress from a suitcase 75% of the year. I like to express but I am also private. The worst thing is to totally figure someone out-as David Lynch says-“Go figure”. I get bored easily and like to play around with proportions and colors. I see it as daily experiments that feed my work. We live in an age where everything has to be understood and explained in a very literal & direct way. I always ask why do we have to understand everything? We don’t need answers, or theories or definitions. We need fluidity, expression, questioning and cultural freedom. I am a big fan of the physicist Professor Stephen Hawking, he says “in my mind I am free”. There are no answers only questions. I like this idea. Thank You.

Here at helpmystyle.ie we know that beauty and style are more than just skin deep. So we’ve enlisted the help of top Nutritional Therapist Andrea Murray of Totalnutrition.ie. Each fortnight Andrea will be sharing her top tips on feeling and looking healthier from the inside out. We kick off the series today by tackling the most immediate issue we all face – healthy skin.

Forget Face lifts – we don’t need them!

Every day, we are bombarded with images and promotions of plastic surgery, Botox, fillers and expensive face creams. Here you are going to learn the secrets of giving yourself your own daily internal and external face lift!

Much of what we perceive as ageing; for example, thinning skin, wrinkles and fine lines often has nothing to do with age at all. In fact, few people realise that as much as 80% to 90% of it is due to sun exposure. Take a look at where the sun don’t shine! – under your arms and inner thighs and see how youthful they look. Sun-ageing is caused by free radicals – particles which attack the body’s cells causing damage or even cell death! But these particles are not only generated by the sun but also by smoking, alcohol, drugs and poor diet, all of which speed up the ageing process.

Reducing free radical exposure is the first place to start and a good high factor UV sun cream used daily on exposed areas of the skin is recommended, especially during these summer months. It is also important to keep a watchful eye on those other sources of free radicals making sure that you keep their intake to a minimum.

That’s the outside of the body – let’s look at what we can do from within. Antioxidants reduce the impact of these free radical nasties. So by including them within our diet and beauty regimes, skin/cell healing can be enhanced and damage reduced.

Some of the key antioxidants for skin support are:-

Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant that can enter the skin with ease. However, be careful. This delicate nutrient can be damaged easily and should therefore be taken alongside vitamin C which can regenerate vitamin E if required. Good sources of vitamin E are nuts and seeds, in particular almonds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts as well as broccoli, kiwi and mango.

Vitamin C not only protects vitamin E it is also a powerful antioxidant in itself, food sources are parsley, broccoli, peppers, strawberries, oranges, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts.

CoQ10 is another anti-aging nutrient and is often included in face creams. It is not only a potent anti-oxidant that supports repair but it also improves the energy balance of the cells by acting as a stimulant. Again, the greens: spinach and broccoli are good sources for this nutrient.

To round off these nutrients, zinc, copper, B6, glucosamine and manganese are also great skin supporters and a diet rich in whole grains, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, pulses, fruits and vegetables will help to hold back the march of time.

The final key nutrient is water; the secret to hydrated and fresh-looking skin. Water supports the removal of toxins in the body which are being generated constantly through pollution, sun damage, stress and chemicals which we take in/absorb through our diet and lifestyles. Make sure you drink 1.5 litres of water daily and that your urine is always clear and odourless (first thing in the morning is the only exception!).

Total Nutrition’s top tips to beautiful healthy looking skin:
•	Good quality UV sun cream protector used daily.
•	Cut out or reduce the smoking, alcohol and drug intake.
•	1.5 litres of filtered water daily.
•	A diet rich in fruit (3 portions a day), vegetables (7 portions a day), whole grains, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, pulses, meat and poultry.
