Fascinators, to Love or Loathe?

By Katie Prior

Not many accessories inspire as much debate as the fascinator. It has come to be considered as naff, common and, for some, evidence of a lack of style. The reason for this is that the fascinator is a hat substitute. Those not brave enough for a hat will wear a fascinator, much to the derision of the more daring.

Women have many reasons for not wearing hats; they aren’t the right height, weight or head-size for one. Generally, the bottom line is it comes down to confidence. If you don’t have the confidence to wear a hat, stand infront of a mirror and remind yourself that you’re no longer 15.

That said, the fascinator doesn’t really deserve all of the negativity aimed at it. It may be playing it safe but it isn’t offensive looking. It’s a victim of fashion snobbery. For those who would rather not wear a full hat, but would like an alternative to the fascinator there are plenty of options that make a statement without covering your entire head. The pillbox hat will sit on your head in much the same way as a fascinator, however it’s much more sophisticated looking.

Also, a simple alice band with some embellishment or veiling has the same playful element as the fascinator but is more youthful and modern. Don’t be one of the many women who try on a hat, laugh and exclaim “Hats don’t suit me!” Be confident and creative and don’t be afraid to experiment.

How do you feel about the fascinator? Got something to say let us know and leave a comment!
