As Ireland’s drag superstar and winner of 1999 Alternative Miss Ireland, Veda has become an absolute cult hit. This “self-made, man-made woman” has been the reigning queen of Dublin’s gay scene for almost a decade. Veda first showcased her unique style of drag performance and unprecedented brand of electro-pop music at the The George—where she continues to performs her now cult hit, Space’N’Veda, every Wednesday. Her recently released debut album Stars Edge is racing up the Irish charts, but she took some time out to talk all things sartorial with HelpMyStyle.ie
What five words best describe your style?
I can do it in four! Jem And The Holograms.
Best style tip?
Try it on back to front. Some wigs and frocks really come alive that way. The low back of a dress, can make a daring front, some chunky zips look better on the front too and a mullet backwards is an asymmetric bob.

It’s practically the weekend so time to indulge in all things naughty (namely clothes & food in my case!). Like fashion, food is one of life’s guilty little pleasures. That’s why I always like to hear good news about the food I love being healthy in oh so many ways. Chillis are one my culinary passions, there’s not much I don’t eat without a healthy dose added to the mix. It appears I’m not alone -stats show how a staggering 98% of us now add spice to our food on a regular basis.
So because it’s Friday and time for a little randomness, here’s some fabulous chilli facts from the lovely peeps at Nando’s (yum!) as part of the New National Chilli Week.
· Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not the seeds that are the hottest part of a chilli, but the white pith that surrounds them and runs in thick veins through the pod

On these cold and windy mornings there’s nothing like the cosiness you feel when you pop on some chunky knitwear and with the hightstreet awash with some amazing patterns and designs there’s no reason not to embrace this trend.
Chunky knits featured on most of the catwalks for AW 09 and this season there’s nothing traditional about how you style knitwear. Don’t be afraid to take a few risks mixing with different textures, fabrics and colours.
One word of note – beware of the volumising power of chunky knits; they can make even the slimmest of people look like they’re bigger than they are. The best way to wear chunky knits is to acknowledge their volume and pair them with more figure hugging clothing. If you have a chunky knit cardigan, for example, pair it with skinny jeans, or leggings to create a sassy silhouette.
Chunky knits feature in most womenswear and menswear collections. The above image features a selection of mens jumpers and cardigans –
1) French Connection €90
2) French Connection €85
3) Lyle & Scott at Urban Outfitters €99
4) Top Man €46

As a self-confessed make-up junkie, I am always on the hunt for a new and exciting range whose sparkling eye colours, luscious lip glosses and flawless foundation catch my eye.
Italian brand Royal Effem is my latest obsession. A market leader in Italy and Europe, and used by the head make up artist for Georgio Armani, the range is now available on the Emerald Isle. Lucky for me, I got to try out some of their gorgeous make up treats and I wasn’t disappointed.

Over the weekend I popped my head into the Pepe London store on Dublin’s Exchequer street. It’s been a while since I’ve been in and I always find it’s one of those stores where I either want to buy the entire contents of the shop (yes, both men & womenswear!) or I leave yearning for something else completely.
On this occasion I was more taken by their new campaign for AW09 which sees the introduction of Madonna’s current love interest Jesus Luz (it’s very clear what she see’s in him, check out more of luscious Luz below!). The shots follow a group of young city bohemians in an autumnal setting – very eye catching indeed.

When it comes to our hair, let’s face it, we blokes pretend we don’t really care what it looks like. But, secretly we love it when we hit style perfection. When your hair is right, the whole world rocks. It’s many a year since I embarked on my pilgrimage in search of the perfect product and low and behold this week I may just have reached my hair heaven.
As a teen, I got through bucket loads of extra strong gel. Yikes! As a twenty-something I dabbled with hair-sprays (yes, hair-sprays), waxes, pastes and liquid sprays. None of them really did the trick. Too hard. Too flat. Too fuzzy. Too sticky. Then along comes Mineral Control ‘Mess It Up Putty’ from those lovely ‘Stu… stu… stu…’ Studio Line people at L’Oréal Paris and, hey presto, my hair is doing all the things I thought it never would – a messed up style with a natural look.

Buying on a budget is the key to shopping this season. Last week I put together a party look for under €100 from Penney’s which offers some of the most affordable fashion on the highstreet. That crown may soon be stolen. On a recent trip to Tesco, I nearly collapsed when I saw the latest collections displayed in all their glory. Some really great pieces, with price tags to match.

For this look I decided to go glunge – glamorous meet grunge! Simply put, glunge is a sexy, edgy look with a bit of goth, darkness and punk thrown in.
Taking a pretty one-shoulder purple frill top (€14) and vamping it up with a black mini-skirt with faux leather side-panel detail (€18), ripped leggings (€14), studded ankle boots (€20) and black patent padded bag with chain strap (€10). The glunge look for just €76! I’ve no doubt Tesco’s are going to give Penney’s a run for their money.
All items are from the F&F collection currently available in all larger Tesco stores or online.

“But have your eye-lashes always been so long?” recently queried a befuddled old flame, “So strange that I never really noticed them before.” “I guess I am just lucky,” retorted yours truly, with a luxurious sweep of my lengthy lashes. But he was right – something had changed. I’d made a discovery that has transformed my sometimes spidery lashes into voluminous weapons of massive drama!

Fat Face recently celebrated the opening of their fifth store in Ireland in the Dundrum Town Centre. I have to be honest, as a store I find it can be a bit hit and miss but their latest collection for Winter has surprised me and features some really nice active lifestyle clothing for men and women.
Doing what they do best, the menswear collection is cool with stylish details for outdoor types including traditional chunky buttons and contrast knit panels along side plaid check shirts. Luxury leather is also offered in jackets.
